Underdog is defined by Merriam-Webster as a competitor thought to have little chance of winning a fight or contest. In reference to the Memphis Grizzlies, there are several words that can be pulled from the definition to define our team: Competitor, Winning and Fight! There is no better feeling for the underdog than totally Demolishing the competition in their backyard like the Grizzlies did with their 110 to 92 win over the Golden State Warriors.
Rudy Gay (22) definitely shined all night long in the Oracle arena with his double- double all-star performance, scoring 26 points with 12 rebounds and 5 assists. Who would have known Rudy was out last year with an injured shoulder, with all the dunks he slammed last night, the boy could have literally put on a clinic. Good stuff for an underdog team huh! Adding to Rudy’s double-double, center Marc Gasol (33) followed up with his own, adding an equally impressive 17 pts and 12 rebounds; forward Mauresse Speights (5) finished the night with 18 pts; OJ Mayo (32) knocked down 4 out of 5 three’s from while contributing 16 pts and Mike Conley (11) showed his grit and grind with 10 points and 12 assists. Oh, how can I talk about the Grizzlies and not mention the one and only guard Tony Allen (9), the team motivator, scored 12 points including a 3 point play when he was fouled on a fast break keeping the Grizz momentum going strong, quickly quieting the arena to the sound of cotton falling on a plush carpet, lol.
Nothing really seemed to be going right for Golden State, although guard Stephen Curry (30) stepped up and knocked down a couple threes to give the Warriors hope. Well hope doesn’t always float, especially when you are playing against a team used to grinding it out to the last minute for that W. Star guard Monte Ellis (8) contributed 16 points and notably rookie guard Klay Thompson (11) finished with 15 points.
The key to the Grizzlies winning this game was their ability to score in transition, outscoring the Warriors 32 to 5 in fast break points! Even when the Grizz did turn the ball over, it didn’t go the opponent, it waddled out into the crowd of Warrior fans who probably wish they could have took the ball and made a shot for the team themselves.
The Warriors gave the Grizz a good fight, but like any underdog, they never give up until the battle is over, continuing to clamor the opponent until the bitter end, even resulting in a couple techs given in the 4th quarter, notably to point guard Nate Robinson (2) who would have faired better sitting on the bench instead of hanging on a goal and intentionally kicking Speights upside the head, maybe he thought that would make him a tall guy, lol.
In the end, it was the underdog, the small market Memphis Grizzlies, who went on to win make an impressive win on the road again against the Golden State Warriors. Head coach Lionel Hollins had this to say about his team: "We're winning, that's all I like. To call yourself a good team, you've got to go out on the road and win. They were focused. . . . We didn't let up in the second half like we did in the first half after we had the lead."
he Grizzlies move to 23-15 on the season, positioning themselves from number 5 to number 3 in the highly competitive western conference. The Grizz continue their battle on the road, taking on the Phoenix Suns Saturday, the Denver Nuggets Sunday and the LA Lakers Tuesday. It’s a good day to be in Grizz nation, a great day to be underdog, and takes heart to play on this team. Grit or Grind, the Grizzlies are destined to shine.
